MESSAGE FROM THE ORGANIZING COMMITTEE

The BRAZILIAN TUNELLING COMMITTEE - CBT - and the Brazilian Association of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering - ABMS, have the honor to invite you to attend the 2nd BRAZILIAN CONGRESS OF TUNNELS AND UNDERGROUND STRUCTURES - CBT'2008 and the INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR "SOUTH AMERICAN TUNNELLING - SAT 2008", to be held in the city of São Paulo, from the 23rd to the 25th of June, 2008.

The events will happen at a very special moment to the Brazilian tunneling engineering when several experiences will be presented to the tunneling community and to the society in general. Emphasis will be given to the works along Line 4 (Yellow) of São Paulo Metro excavated by a very large diameter EPBS tunneling machine. Other experiences will be discussed such as the 3 km long extension of Line 2 - Green, (Vila Prudente direction), excavation works for hydro power projects and mining, gas and oil pipelines. The strategic São Francisco River project and its scheme for transfering part of its volume to other nearby valleys will also be discussed in details.

The Congress will cover 17 themes of great importance to professionals associated with underground construction. This unique venue allows an opportunity for renewing acquaintances, networking and the important interchange of technical ideas and experience. Participants will be given the opportunity to discuss their research and experience related to the use of the underground space as well as to listen to new reports on technologies and trends in the underground construction industry.

The International Seminar SAT'2008, will be organized in the third day of this event with special lectures delivered by experts from Brazil and by well-known foreign guests as well as paper presentation by participants from South America.

Paper submission is open to all professionals associated with research, design, construction, maintenance and repair of tunnels and underground constructions in Brazil and elsewhere. Selected papers will be delivered in plenary session and a very dynamic poster session is under planning to accommodate other presentations. All accepted papers will be published in full version in the Congress proceedings.

Altogether there will 3 days of intense activities combining special lectures, technical sessions with paper presentations, poster sessions, workshops, a technical exhibition and technical visits.
