Infrastructure construction by means of Trenchless Technologies (TT) is common knowledge in Brazil as abroad. Just think of a highway tunnel: this is TT construction, as it avoids the destruction of preservation areas while allows transposing natural obstacles. With the approach of installation and rehabilitation of utility networks (water, sewage, gas, telecommunications, etc.) in the recent years (last two or three decades) the underground environment is completely packed by the installation of the various utilities. Civil engineering needed instruments, techniques and technologies that allow the "navigation" or "installation" of new services that rehabilitate or renovate improving the quality of the utility services. TT has come to respond to this demand. Decades ago, this concern has been answered and resolved by ISTT (International Society for Trenchless Technology) in London, mother and commander of all TT Associations in the world, currently present in more than 20 countries.
In 1999 ABRATT joined this privileged group of entities and ever since then has been carrying out a hard, almost religious, work of promoting and supporting these technologies, jointly with Universities of world, including the University of São Paulo - USP - institutes as the OPUS Institute and helping in the qualification of professionals in all levels.
Among its objectives one can mention the evolution of TT science and practice for public benefit, promoting education, training, study and research in the area, as well as stimulating the development of new techniques and the use of trenchless methods of proven efficacy for the installation and rehabilitation of underground networks, besides promoting network mapping and rent.
Currently we count on a vast library, access to papers and Congress of all over the world, technical journeys, and the possibility of entering the membership in the various modalities, allowing easy placement of the professional in the market.
With this spirit, a significant number of events as Workshops and Congresses have been offered to the technical community in our country. Nevertheless, we are sure this is just a small sample of what we intend to offer.
Trenchless Technology (TT) is an option of executing works related to installation, repairing and rehabilitating underground pipes, lines and cables by using techniques that minimize or eliminate the need of digging.
Trenchless Technologies - or No Dig - can reduce environmental damages and social costs, while represent an economic alternative for open trench installation, rehabilitation and repairing. More and more, trenchless technology is seen as an activity of general application rather than a specialty, and many network installation companies tend to apply TT as much as possible, due to costs as well as social-environmental aspects.
Accurate surveys and adequate field investigations are essential for the success of these methods, for minimizing the risks of unpredicted events during the execution of the works.
Trenchless Technology (TT) can be divided in three major categories: rehabilitation and recovery, in place renewal and installation of new networks.
It comprehends the methods for recovering the integrity of defective piping and underground structures, as well as extending their life. The techniques comprehend Slip lining, Close-fit lining, Spray lining, CIPP (cured-in-place pipe), Repairing and sealing of single spots, Recovery of large diameter pipes and Inspection wells.
Refers to the substitution of a network by another of equal or larger diameter through pipe-bursting of the existing network and simultaneous installation of the final piping.
Comprehends Percussion Drilling and Jacking, Direction and Guided Drilling, Tunneling and Micro-tunneling Jacking.
